Epworth Medical Imaging’s Dr Paul Smith (pictured) is one of the new breed of radiologists, practising interventional radiology to achieve minimally invasive image-guided diagnosis and treatment of diseases.
One such disease is liver cancer. Dr Smith hopes to introduce a new procedure to deliver chemotherapy directly into the liver, using fluoroscopy-guided wires to bypass blockages. This new service will spark opportunities for developing a liver and bile duct research program in collaboration with Geelong’s Deakin University.
State-of-the-art MRI highlights new detail
The Magnetic Resource Imaging (MRI) at Epworth Medical Imaging Geelong is the roomiest MRI available. Its strong magnet produces high resolution images and offers clinicians the best chance of spotting potential abnormalities. “It operates more quickly than in the past, so patients spend less time in what can be a noisy and claustrophobic environment”, said Dr Smith.
Enabling collaboration through high-speed access to MRI images
The new Medical Imaging Unit at Epworth Geelong has the equivalent of 19 full time staff and expects to take more than 100 million images each year.
Images captured at Epworth Medical Imaging’s site in Geelong are networked via high-speed internet to Epworth Richmond and Epworth Freemasons, so radiologists can review images together in real time, enabling second and third opinions on complex cases. Storage of images is primarily onsite and backed up to six external sites for added security.
