In 2015 Epworth Medical Imaging appointed Associate Professor Pramit Phal as clinical director of imaging to lead a team of experienced and highly skilled radiologists. A/Prof Phal comes to Epworth Medical Imaging with extensive experience and knowledge and was previously director of MRI at The Royal Melbourne Hospital and deputy director of Radiology at the University of Melbourne.

Dr Paul Smith

Dr Paul Smith completed his MRI Musculoskeletal Fellowship training at Regional Imaging / MIA, which featured a heavy sports medicine case load, with focus on MR imaging, ultrasound and interventional procedures. Dr Smith graduated from the University of Melbourne Medical School in 2004, prior to which he read Arts and completed a Bachelor Science with Honours.

After completing his residency years at the Royal Melbourne and Alfred Hospitals, Dr Smith trained in Radiology at the Austin Hospital in Melbourne. There, he completed general intervention, body and neuroradiology fellowships. Subsequent to this, Dr Smith spent time training in body imaging, which included musculoskeletal tumour imaging, at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Centre in New York.

Dr Smith first joined the Epworth Medical Imaging team at Epworth Richmond this year, having previously worked for Regional Imaging as a Consultant Radiologist. He currently sits on the Medical Imaging Advisory Board for the School of Medicine, at Deakin University, and the Epworth Geelong, Medical Advisory Board.Whilst Dr Smith acknowledges his broad range of subspecialty interests, he has subspecialty skills in Interventional Radiology, and his main diagnostic expertise lies in Musculoskeletal and Body imaging.

He has presented at numerous international conferences, and continues to pursue his research interests. Dr Smith has a keen interest in the application of information technology in radiology, and is currently working on projects to enhance Radiologist and patient experience of Radiology.

Dr Alain Lavoipierre is one of Australia’s foremost uroradiologists. Alain’s career is highly distinguished, with his being regarded as one of the pioneers in prostate MRI and of transrectal ultrasound and biopsy in Australia. Alain’s particular interest in uroradiology includes:

  • expertise in prostate MRI
  • renal biopsies
  • contrast enhanced ultrasound of renal lesions
  • CT urography and urinary tract sonography

His is well versed in minimally invasive procedures of the spine (facet and sacro-iliac joints, nerve root injections and epidurals), bursae and joints (including hydrodilatations). He is well respected as a general radiologist, is licensed in nuclear medicine, including therapy (iodine and strontium) and also has an interest in imaging of the thyroid and parathyroids.

He has over 35 years’ experience within the medical field and has extensive knowledge within field of oncology imaging, in particular prostatic MRI. His career sees him as an author, with numerous papers published and an international speaker. Dr Styles also lectures and mentor’s a number of undergraduates. Dr Styles is our lead radiologist covering prostate reporting.

Dr Karamoskos is a consultant radiologist at Epworth Medical Imaging Freemasons and Richmond. He completed his fellowship in nuclear medicine at the Alfred Hospital, is American Society of Nuclear Cardiology board certified and PET and MRI accredited. His expertise lies in radiation protection – he is a public representative on the Radiation Health Committee of ARPANSA (Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency) and a member of the Nuclear Safety Committee, ARPANSA. Dr Karamoskos is a visiting lecturer, Nossal Institute for Global Health (University of Melbourne) and speaks internationally on radiation and nuclear safety matters.

Dr Chan is a consultant radiologist at Epworth Medical Imaging Freemasons. She has high level expertise and advanced imaging skills in breast imaging, paediatric radiology, neuroradiology and body imaging, having completed Fellowships at St Vincent’s BreastScreen in breast imaging and related intervention, diagnostic paediatric radiology at Monash Health, and diagnostic neuroradiology at Austin Health, and radiology training at Austin Health.

Her special interests lie in neuroradiology including brain, head and neck and spine MRI; paediatric imaging, in particular neonatal hip, spine and cranial ultrasound; screening and diagnostic mammography including 3D mammography, breast MRI, and body MRI and CT, particularly oncology, colorectal and gynaecologic imaging.

Dr Susan Kouloyan–Ilic

Dr Kouliyan-Ilic graduated from the University of Melbourne and completed her radiology training at The Alfred where she completed her MRI fellowship. Her areas of special interest follows women’s health, in particular breast and gynaecologic imaging, along with neuroradiology and musculoskeletal.

Dr Kouliyan-Ilic performs a wide range of image guided biopsies, drainages and joint injections. She also has extensive experience in breast imaging and all related procedures. Her skills and talent demonstrates her passion to bring an excellent service to patients, referrals and her colleagues always giving respect and compassion.

Enhancing her knowledge and keen interest in research Dr Kouliyan-Ilic is currently completing her PhD at Melbourne University.

Dr Compton is a consultant at Epworth Medical Imaging Richmond. Graduating from the University of Melbourne in 2005, he completed his radiology training at the Austin Hospital where he also completed a Masters in Medicine (Radiology). Dr Compton completed a fellowship at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Canada in cardiovascular MRI after his completion of advanced training positions in both Thoracic and Paediatric Radiology.

Although his main areas of interest are in cardiothoracic imaging along with paediatric radiology, Dr Compton has sound general radiology skills having rounded-off his experience in a general radiology practice in North Queensland prior to joining the team at Epworth Medical Imaging.

He maintains a keen interest in research and education, having co-ordinated and delivered medical student radiology tutorials, and giving radiology lectures interstate. He has delivered presentations at both national and international conferences and his research can be found in high impact journals in his field including both Radiology and the AJR.

Her passion for developing a service that blends the best public and private radiology is reflected in her choice of work, which gives her the opportunity to collaborate with other clinicians while delivering a high quality of service. Dr Thong areas of interest are of the Head and Neck – including ENT, plexus and nerve imaging.

Dr Sawyer is a consultant radiologist with high level expertise in body and breast imaging, having prior consultant appointments at Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, The Women’s Hospital in Melbourne, and at Monash BreastScreen, after completing the cross-sectional imaging Fellowship in MRI and CT at Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre in 2007, and radiology training at Western Health.

Dr Sawyer has a broad diagnostic imaging skill set, with expertise and special interest in breast MRI for high risk screening and diagnostic staging, rectal cancer staging pelvic MRI, multiparametric prostate MRI, benign and malignant gynaecologic pelvic MRI, abdominal MRI, brain, head and neck, spine and musculoskeletal MRI, 3D mammography, oncologic staging CT and CT colonography.

Her procedural skill set includes breast biopsies under mammographic-guidance and ultrasoundguidance, targeted and non-targeted deep organ biopsies and drainages under CT – and ultrasoundguidance, ultrasound-guided joint injections, CT-guided epidural, nerve root and facet joint injections, ultrasound-guided Implanon removals, and fluoroscopic-guided procedures including hysterosalpingograms and PICC line insertions.
