Epworth Richmond emergency department billing policy

During your Emergency Department visit at Epworth Richmond, the doctors overseeing your care may require diagnostic imaging services to assist them in the diagnosis and management of your care.

If you require diagnostic imaging during your Emergency Department visit, a fixed out of pocket fee is payable to Epworth Medical Imaging (“EMI”), as follows:

Simple: $130 Complex: $245
  • General X-ray
  • Mammography
  • Bone Mineral Densitometry (BMD)
  • MRI
  • CT
  • Ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy
  • All other scans

Maximum diagnostic imaging out of pocket fee for ED =$245 irrespective of the number of scans.

Multiple simple scans = $130, multiple complex scans = $245, combination of simple and complex scans = $245

EXCEPT FOR pensioner concession card holders, health care card holders and Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA) Gold Card holders = NO imaging out of pocket fee in ED (show your card to reception staff).

No diagnostic imaging in ED = no diagnostic imaging out of pocket fee.

(Billing policy does not apply to Epworth Medical Imaging located at Epworth Geelong.)

Epworth Medical Imaging accepts cash, cheque, EFTFOS, MasterCard and Visa for payment on the day. If you have provided your bank details to Medicare, we can lodge Medicare claims electronically so as your Medicare rebate is direct deposited into your bank account.

Pensioners and healthcare card-holders will be bulked billed for all items covered under the Medicare schedule, although some surgical procedures and scans may incur a cost, as they are not covered under Medicare. Our staff will inform you of costs prior to your examination. Please have your Medicare card ready to present to reception.

No out-of-pocket fees are charged on Medicare-eligible examinations for pensioner concession and health care card holders, Epworth HealthCare staff and Visiting Medical Officers*

A weekly cap on out-of-pocket fees for inpatients of $950 applies where there are Medicare-eligible item numbers.

* This excludes some interventional and fluoroscopic procedures, multi-region MRI examinations (i.e. brain and spine) and some complex examinations (i.e. breast, cardiac, prostate, female pelvis, liver, MRI examinations), which attract special fees. Medicare ineligible items will attract an out-of-pocket fee. Information correct as at 1 October 2015 and is subject to change.

**Listing only applies to DVA Gold card holders. DVA White card holders have limited coverage for imaging services.
