A/PROF PRAMIT PHAL
Director of Radiology MBBS, FRANZCR
Associate Professor Phal is the clinical director of imaging who leads a dedicated team of radiologists.
He graduated from the University of Melbourne in 1996, and completed specialisation in radiology at the Austin Hospital in 2003, including an MRI fellowship his fifth year. He then completed two further years of fellowship training in the areas of musculoskeletal and neuroradiology at Oregon Health and Science University in Portland, Oregon, USA. Prior to joining Epworth Medical Imaging, A/Prof Phal was a consultant radiologist at the Royal Melbourne Hospital for nine years where he held the position of director of MRI for eight years. Furthermore, A/Prof Phal was previously the Deputy Director of Radiology at the University of Melbourne where in addition to conducting research he coordinated radiology teaching in the MD and Masters of Medicine (Radiology) courses.
In addition to comprehensive general diagnostic and procedural radiology skills, A/Prof Phal’s specific area of expertise is in neuroradiology, in particular magnetic resonance (MR) imaging of the brain, spine and ear, nose and throat. He brings to Epworth Medical Imaging considerable experience in advanced MR techniques in neuroimaging such as functional MRI, diffusion tensor tractography and MR spectroscopy. A/Prof Phal also has a strong focus and track record in education and research, having received many teaching awards, published in excess of 35 peer reviewed articles and being an examiner for the Royal Australian and NZ College of Radiologists. A keen advocate of education and research, A/Prof Phal holds a lecturing appointment at the University of Melbourne, where he invests in and mentors the next generation of radiologists.
Over his career A/Prof Phal has been awarded several research grants from the NHMRC and RANZCR. He will continue his research studies and work towards a research higher degree.
As clinical director, A/Prof Phal is responsible for providing clinical leadership to the Epworth Medical Imaging team. He will be the point of contact for clinicians and champion the highest standards of quality of healthcare, service and safety.
